What does the Technology Transfer Office do?
The professionals from the Technology Transfer Office, TTO, perform a wide range of services, all related to transfer of knowledge. They work together with VU and VUmc researchers in establishing contract conditions with public and private parties. Appreciation of the value of the knowledge and expertise generated at VU and VUmc is the most important element of negotiations with industry. TTO professionals also provide legal advice about exchange of confidential information, materials or contract research, and assist with decision-making about patenting and valuation when out-licensing patents.
In addition, TTO assists with development of business strategies, market analyses, business plans, formation of spin-off companies, and getting access to financial instruments particularly geared toward valorization of knowledge and product development. TTO actively supports entrepreneurial scientists through courses and coaching, and with developing business plans and subsidy applications. TTO also provides access to pre-seed loans for performing feasibility studies for business opportunities.
The overall goal of the TTO is to convert the scientific and medical knowledge of the VU and VUmc into opportunities that find their way to society and industry. TTO controls the patent portfolio of VU and VUmc, manages all business ventures, and negotiates with researchers for the university’s rights in large subsidy programs and research contracts. TTO has been created jointly by the VU university and VUmc, and it reports directly to the boards of both institutes.
