Why Technology Transfer

3_2_1_Why_think-PatentbeforesThe VU university and VU medical centre are committed to translating their scientific discoveries into practical applications and marketable innovation. As a result,  VU and VUmc  provide services to their scientists for managing technology transfer, and the main activities of the Technology Transfer Office will be listed below.

Commitment to technology transfer results in a large number of collaborations between the university and industry or public organizations, and in the formation of spin-off companies. Many of these activities involve the establishment of intellectual property rights, and the subsequent out-licensing of these rights to external parties. All these activities are collectively termed “knowledge transfer” or sometimes also “knowledge valorization” or “technology transfer”, and the role of a Technology Transfer Office (TTO) in a university is to provide all professional support for issues related to these activities.

There are many financial instruments available for promoting these activities, and the TTO will assist you in identifying  subsidy programs that foster entrepreneurship and product development. The TTO is also your gateway to the public and private sector seeking access to your knowledge and expertise. To you as a scientist, this creates new opportunities for seeing the results of your research translated into new diagnostics, therapeutics, chemical products, services or tools, to name but a few of the possibilities.
