Brief description
BDS BV is a biotech spin-out company from the VU University of Amsterdam. Its main focus is on development and marketing of bio-based detection technologies, such as the proprietary CALUX® cell-based luminescence bioassay systems for safety assessment of chemical/pharmaceutical compounds of food, feed and environmental matrices. BDS is also coordinator of the Ecogenomics Consortium and is involved in development and marketing of (meta)genomics based tools for use in industrial and environmental biotechnology.

Problem in the market
Food safety, healthy drinking water with sufficient quality and a healthy and sustainable environment are all threatened by contamination. The origin of this problem is the ever increasing use of a wide variety of chemical and pharmaceutical compounds in our everyday life. Analytical chemical analysis of the occurrence of the number of compounds - as potentially harmful contaminants in our food, drinking water and environment - is virtually impossible. It requires development of novel, effect-based fast and low cost screening methods.

How does BDS address the problem?
BDS develops and provides novel effect-based bioassays to quickly access and manage potential contamination problems. These address quality and safety issues at an affordable price level.
